We always take steps to help our patients feel welcome, from answering their questions and addressing their concerns, to carefully discussing their oral health and what to expect from treatment. However, we know that many people have concerns about their treatments, often due to dental anxiety. To help ensure our patients remain calm and comfortable, your Overland Park, KS, dentist provides sedation dentistry.
Ensuring Your Comfort
One major reason we recommend sedation is for people undergoing treatments such as dental extraction, root canal therapy, or dental implant placement. The calming agent helps people feel comfortable throughout the procedure, with little to no memory afterward.
Addressing Your Dental Anxiety
Studies show that anywhere between 8% and 15% of people in the United State suffer from some form of dental anxiety. For many, this anxiety means avoiding the dentist, even for routine exams and cleanings. However, without routine care to remove plaque and monitor your smile, minor issues like enamel erosion and inflammation can lead to cavities, infection, gum disease, and even tooth loss. Which is why we offer calming agents to help anxious patients undergo the treatments they need to maintain a healthy smile. We will gladly walk you through each aspect of the procedure, and listen to your concerns. We want you to feel comfortable, and enjoy your time in the office, and most importantly, come away with a healthier smile.
Our Sedation Options
We have two different options available. The most commonly prescribed is nitrous oxide, also known as laughing gas. We administer the gas through a mask over the nose. You enter a calm state, with no memory of your treatment afterward. However, the effects will wear off once the procedure ends, so you can drive yourself home or even return to work or school. We also have a more potent version with oral sedation. We administer a pill or liquid shortly before your procedure begins. You enter a much deeper state of relaxation, perfect for those with severe anxiety or who need more extensive treatments, such as oral surgery. This option may also be combined with nitrous oxide. The effects will take time to wear off, so we recommend having a friend or family ember available to bring you home.
