Dental Sedation

When you’re comfortable visiting your dentist, you’re more likely to attend regular cleaning appointments and receive more involved dental treatment, if necessary. If you feel anxious about your treatment, or if you are fearful of visiting the dentist’s office, then dental sedation may be able to help you relax. Sedation comes in many forms, such as nitrous oxide and oral medication. Depending on your personal needs and preferences, Dr. Cook can prescribe an appropriate sedative option to make your visit more comfortable and your treatment more effective.

Sedation Options

Nitrous oxide, commonly referred to as laughing gas, is a mild sedative that’s administered through a small mask worn over your nose. The effects are moderate, and despite its nickname, the gas produces a mildly euphoric feeling that keeps you calm and still while Dr. Cook performs your treatment.

Oral sedation is a more potent medication and is taken as a pill or liquid shortly before your procedure begins. Patients who fear dental treatment or who must undergo an extensive restorative procedure may benefit from the more potent effects of oral sedation, or a combination of both nitrous oxide and medication.
