Quiz: How Does Professional Teeth Whitening Work?

While there are plenty of store bought options available, they rarely offer the same level of whitening as our professional cosmetic options. In today’s blog, we’re looking at the professional teeth whitening procedures we have for our Overland Park, KS, patients.

  1. True or False: Our habits impact the brightness of our smiles.
  2. True or False: We can brighten smiles in one visit.
  3. True or False: We have an at-home option.
  4. True or False: Masking intrinsic teeth stains is possible with restorations.

Answer Key

  1. True. When we consume foods high in sugar and other starches, the resulting plaque buildup will make stains more likely to appear. In addition, drinks with dark pigments, such as coffee, tea, soda, and red wine, will promote discoloration as well. Not brushing and flossing properly also leads to plaque buildup and discoloration as well.
  2. True. In order to remove discoloration in one visit, we may recommend our in-office procedure. We place a protective covering over the lips and gums. We then apply the bleaching gel and use a light to activate the gel and break up the discoloration.
  3. True. For more serious stains, we may suggest our at-home option. We provide a set of plastic trays and a powerful bleaching gel. At home, the patient fills the trays with gel and wears them daily, usually for 30 to 45 minutes. After about one to two weeks, the teeth can become noticeably brighter.
  4. True. While our whitening solutions address extrinsic stains, intrinsic stains, which form below the enamel, may be more difficult. Fortunately, using dental bonding and porcelain veneers we can mask the stains and instantly brighten your smile.
